Nom rare porté dans les Deux-Sèvres, plus fréquent sous la forme Bercegeay (44, 79). Autres variantes : Bercegeais, Berceger, Bercejay, Bersejet. Il s'agit sans doute du surnom d'un archer : en ancien français le verbe "berser" (ou "bercer") signifiait "tirer à l'arc", et le "gai" était un oiseau de bois servant de cible.
